The importance of fresh website content

Adding fresh content to your website has become one of the most SEO positive activities you can undertake.

A good content strategy underpins all your other digital marketing efforts.

Whilst Google's exact search algorithm is a closely guarded secret, there are a number of things we know about ranking factors which point to content being one of the most valuable weapons in your SEO armoury.

It is also probably, for SME's at least, one of the most neglected and under-utilised forms of digital marketing. Updating your blog, even a couple of times a month can seem like a huge challenge, especially as you are likely to be concentrating on running your business!

Focus on search intent

Quality or Quantity

Informative website content - especially longer form content, is increasingly being prioritised in search results.

Research from SerpIQ on the top 10 search results for over 10,000 keywords showed that the first ranking Google search result has an average of over 2400 words, and the 10th ranked result has an average of just over 2000 words.

Content means keywords

Time worth spending

Creating well written and properly researched content which has been written with your website visitor’s intention in mind takes a lot of time, especially if you are not a natural when it comes to writing.  It is however, time worth spending.

According to Google’s own stats, 53% of shoppers say they always do research before they buy to ensure they are making the best possible choice.

If you are able to offer potential customers the information they need to make their online purchase through your content, they are more likely to return to you when they are ready to make a purchase.

Interact with your customers

Content means keywords...

Website content should take into account the intention of the searcher in terms of the information it provides.

A web page which is useful and relevant to the searchers intent is likely to have a low bounce rate and a high dwell time – both indicators of the quality of the content.  Another ranking factor which favours high quality content is page authority, specifically backlinks which are also seen as an endorsement.

Keywords on their own are becoming less relevant in terms of optimisation, Instead, it’s better to think of keywords as topics. Search engines now look beyond the words of the search and instead attempt to focus on the purpose behind them.  When you write content with your website visitor’s objectives in mind, that content is likely to be rich in keywords and key phrases.

Outsourcing could be the answer

For many people, the idea of sitting down and writing a blog post or website editorial content is a nightmare.
